What is meant by caption text?

 Caption text is a short text that is above, below or in the image as a complement to the image.  Many people think that captions are the same as quotes, even though they are different.  Quotes are usually just text without pictures but can also include pictures.  The difference between a caption and a quote is that a quote is a quote that is usually taken from a book, song or dialogue in a film and is accompanied by the name of the author.  While the caption is writing that is made to explain the image.  Captions are used as a means of expression on social media.

Function of Caption 

Text Helping the reader or viewer to understand information that my not be in a photo or a video

Rules of Writing a Caption 

  1. Supply specific information (answering 5 wh-question) 
  2. Use Present Tense on the first sentence
  3. Caption is written in a complete sentences
  4. Clearly identify the people and location in the photo
  5. Identify the person from left to right

Language Features of Caption Text 

  • Exclamation 
  • Adjective Phrase 
  • Question 
  • Prepositional Phrase

Some examples of caption text have characteristics that distinguish them from the usual type of text.  The following are some of the characteristics of caption text that can be distinguished from other types of text:

  •  The language used is short and clear.
  •  Can use any tense.
  •  Contains motivation, invitations, and pearls of wisdom.
  •  Often used on images that are not clear

Some Kinds of Captions in English

 There are many examples of caption text in English.  Generally, each caption text can be classified into several types.  The following are kinds of caption text which are classified into several themes:
  1.  Education
Generally, this caption text contains educational motivation and matters related to education.

Example : 


A well-educated mind will always have more questions than answers (Helen Keller).

     2. Environment

Generally, this text caption contains an invitation to protect the environment.In addition, several caption texts also explain phenomena and events related to the environment.

Example : 

Let’s protect our Earth for a better future.

( Ayo kita lindungi bumi kita untuk masa depan yang lebih baik. )


     3. Corona

As is well known, the world is still being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Therefore, caption text about corona is one of the things that is relevant today.

Example :



Better to prevent COVID-19 than to cure it.

Lebih baik mencegah COVID-19 daripada mengobatinya.

      4. School
caption text made with a school theme can be in the form of how important school is in life and what should be taught in school.

Example : 


Learning in a school just a small part of the long life learning

( Belajar di sekolah hanyalah bagian kecil dari belajar semasa hidup. )

In addition to the various types of caption text above, there are several other types of caption text.  This is based on how the sentences in the caption text are made.  Here are other types of caption text:

  •  expanded

Read out these two captions (text 1 and text 2) loudly and meaningfully and take a note on your notebook if you find some words that you do not understand. Then consult the dictionary.

1. Carry ( move, transfer, take, bring, lug )
Meaning : . support and move (someone or something) from one place to another.

2. passengers ( traveler, commuter, rider)
Meaning : a traveler on a public or private conveyance other than the driver, pilot, or crew

3. traffic ( cars, trucks, holdup, stoppage)
Meaning : vehicles moving on a road or public highway.

4. owned ( admit, allow, concede, accept, agree)
Meaning : admit or acknowledge that something is the case or that one feels a certain way.
